WHÈN YOUR WHATSAPP NUMBER GÈTS BLOCKED, AND THÈN EVERYONE THINKS YOU’RE CLOSING SHOP.

If you've ever had a WhatsApp number suddenly blocked for no given reason or for an open ended reason like "this acount's activity did not follow WhatsApp's terms of service", then you know the confusion, frustration, and unexpected drama that follows. Recently, one of my main WhatsApp numbers (+256 705 162000) was blocked "permanently".
It wasn't the first time this happened, and each previous blockings came without an explanation but were temporary. The one time WhatsApp actually replied, they admitted it was a mistake to block the number and they even apologized, but still i had lost most of my groups plus latest messages and broadcasts.
But as anyone in the real estate world will tell you, that your WhatsApp number isn't just a number. It's your lifeline to clients, agents, leads, groups, family members and other private and business networks that you've built over several years. So when it goes down, people notice ... and they worry.
One of the biggest challenges I observed was that during the first four weeks, many contacts continued following up on our most recent discussions but were not receiving any responses. Some even posted reminders, still with no reply, until they eventually called in frustration, complaining that I was ignoring their messages.
In several cases, I had embedded links in my blogs and social media posts that were routing to the blocked number, so I had to edit and change the numbers, which was cumbersome and also time consuming to edit or undo several years of valuable content.
Are you closing the RED business?
That's literally what Musa, one of the many concerned callers, asked me after seeing my number being removed from several major real estate.related WhatsApp groups. He couldn't imagine that a RED-related phone number would suddenly start disappearing from multiple real estate groups (including its own groups) where it had been active for so many years.
And he wasn't alone. Catherine Nanteza from Pishon Consults Ltd also wrote me a message on my other number and asked why I left the "AREA Marketplace" group. I had to tell her the truth: I didn't leave willingly, my number was blocked and eventually removed from all groups, even Aron Reeno from the Reeno Group reach out to me to find out if everything was okay at the RED, as he was interested to join our listing platform and to get our free website offer before the end of the year.
It's surprising how many people track your presence silently "in kamooli", and speak up when something seems off. In a strange way, that concern feels comforting. It's a reminder that the work we do at the Real Estate Database (RED) truly impacts people.
The "Zuckerbarg Block" Theory
So what triggered the block this time?
It's not very clear what caused the blocking, and Zuckerbarg is still not responding to both my calls and messages. At this point, I'm honestly planning to sue him. However, I had recently set up several WhatsApp broadcasts in order to re-target all the RED-related qualified leads, and everything was working fine, until it wasn't.
It seems Zuckerbarg did not like my broadcasts. I strongly suspect that's where the trouble originated, so he blocked me (and even ghosted me).
Switching to a New Number, Again
Because of the block, I've shifted to my MTN number (+256 788 162000) for all WhatsApp communication. I'm still trying to negotiate the reinstatement of the old account, and I'm hopeful it will be resolved soon.
In the meantime, people are paying attention. They're calling. They're asking. They're checking in. Some are genuinely concerned. Others are confused. A few are even worried we're shutting down, which is not the case.
I reassure them all: RED is not going anywhere. We are still promoting and marketing properties, still creating content, still pushing visibility, and still serving the real estate sector with the same energy as always.
I'm Not the Only One
Interestingly, this same issue recently happened to one of the RED members, Emmanuel Bizimana from Wemac Properties. At the time, I assumed he was far more aggressive on WhatsApp than I was, so his situation felt distant and unlikely to happen to me. But here we are. It took him nearly six months for his number to be unblocked, which means I, too, might be in this for the long haul. So I have to hang in there, it looks like it's going to be a long journey back to normal.
A Lesson for All of Us
What this experience has taught me, and what I hope other business owners learn, is simple: WhatsApp broadcasts may feel convenient and may seem like the best way to organize and retarget leads, but they're not a safe way to send mass messages. Use them too often and you might find yourself blocked without any warning. The best aproach is the use the groups since most people join them on their own.
Moving Forward, With Resilience
This little (or not so little) setback hasn't slowed us down. If anything, it has reminded us how strong our network is and how many people care about the work RED does. And for that, I'm truly grateful. We'll weather these digital storms together, one restored WhatsApp account at a time.
If your number ever gets blocked, remember, you're not alone.
(Update: The number was finally unblocked after 2 months, good enough the most recent backup was still intact, i restored all my contacts but not the groups, so i had to make new requests to every group admin and many of them have been kind to me).
